PORT FOLEUX, near La Roche Bernard

Two cottages sleeping 5 and 2

This traditional Longere is situated on a south facing hillside overlooking the river Vilaine in a quiet location about km uphill from the busy little River Port of Foleux. WiFi signal in both cottages.

The larger gite Bryn Dewi has an enclosed back garden which is suitable for well-behaved dogs and children.  Bryn Dewi has a traditional open fireplace and largely traditional furniture.

It also has full central heating for the cooler months.  The modern fitted kitchen has gas hotplate and electric oven, a  fridge, microwave etc.

There are stairs leading from the living room up to a mezzanine with access to the upstairs bedrooms with a doorway out into the garden.

It has one downstairs ensuite bedroom with twin beds which can be made into double. One upstairs double bedroom and a small single bedroom. It has two toilets and shower rooms. There is also a washing machine).

Tyn-Y-Coed, has one bedroom and has recently been entirely renovated.   It has a good Living room with armchair and sofa-bed, electric heater, television etc. (photos to follow when furnished by owners)

A newly fitted kitchen, with all mod cons including a dishwasher, washing machine, electric oven and hob, refrigerator etc

It has one generous bedroom with excellent views from the window with an en-suite with a bath and a shower in the bath, and a toilet.  There is another toilet downstairs.

The front door opens onto a quiet lane with only one house further down. The small unfenced garden for the cottage is across the lane.

It is a 500metres walk down the hill to the waterfront and boats at Foleux. The river has canoes, boats etc for hire by arrangement and there are many places for freshwater fishing. Bicycles can be hired at the port office.

There is a popular bar/restaurant down by the marina 500 metres from the cottages with superb Moules in season.

There are many walks starting in Foleux and some very pretty countryside between the cottage and Beganne. The cottage is sandwiched between two chateau. Chateau Etier 1 km to the west and Chateau Lehelec 1 km to the east. Both still occupied but only Lehelec open to the public.

Canoes can be hired which can be delivered to the waterfront by the hire company by arrangement (details in cottage).  River trips available from Arzal to Redon on Vedettes Jaune including restaurant boat (bigger than this one above). The river is still used by commercial traffic going up to Redon.

Road leading down to the cottages. The cottage roof is just visible between the last two pairs of trees, recognisable on the right as you come down by its arched back-door. Our neighbours roof is visible before the first two trees.

Early morning walk (February) down muddy track to river

Bats in the Belfrey - and proud of it!  That is the case with Beganne Church which has a colony of quite rare bats in the building. Les Grandes Murines ... Which we call Greater Mouse-Eared bats. They are supposed to be extinct now in UK but there are several colonies around France. See framed pictures on church wall.

Wild life

From the cottage we can watch Marsh Harriers and other predator birds hunting over the river and the wooded hills around. We also have plenty of hoopoes in season with their distinctive call. Very occasionally seen as well.

In this aerial picture the cottages are in the little group at the top of the picture

Pets are welcome but dogs are expected to help with the gardening and keep an eye on the cows! 25 supplement charged per week. Pets are NOT allowed on the furniture.

If you walk down the lane in front of the cottages it goes past our neighbour then it degenerates into a path which leads to the waterfront and Marina). Of course it is just as quick to walk down the roadway which is generally very quiet.
